Cam Cute: Hockey Boy

Setting: 7:45am, Saturday morning, in the Ottawa hotel room.
Mama: Cam, do you want to watch cartoons?
Cameron: No, Mama, watch hockey!
Mama: You want to watch hockey instead of cartoons?
Cameron (performs toddler equivalent of eye roll): Yes, Mama.

We proceed to watch hockey for another hour, until Tim wakes up. Thank goodness for Canada, who has hockey on multiple channels at all times of the day!! We watched hockey in the morning, noon and night (whenever we were in the hotel room, it was on). At one point, we couldn't find a station in English playing a hockey game, so we watched recaps from a game on a French station. Cam didn't seem to mind one bit.

Setting: Dinner table, Monday night. Cameron refuses to eat his hamburger.
Mama: Cameron, did you know that if you eat your hamburger, it will make you stronger? A big strong hockey player.
Cameron: Meat make me strong for hockey?
Mama: Yes, it will make you strong. Drinking milk will make you strong too.
Cameron: Oooohhhhhh, okay.

Cameron proceeds to devour most of hamburger and two glasses of milk, stopping occasionally to do muscle poses with his arms and tell us "Me get strong!" Whatever works, right?

Winterlude Weekend, Part 2

After skating on the canal, we went back to the hotel room for lunch and naptime. Before naptime, Cameron found this little cubby that he wanted to sleep in. It is the TV stand! He put pillows in there, closed the doors and played in there. What a goof!
After everyone woke up from their naps, we went across the river to Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, which is where the snow sculptures and Snowflake Kingdom was. We have never made it over there, in all of the eight years we have attended Winterlude. We will certainly be putting it on the agenda for the future because it was awesome!!

Cam and Daddy at the entrance. This was a giant wall of snow with carvings in it. Very cool!
First stop was an ice maze. It is hard to see it here, but the walls were high enough that Tim and I could just barely see over them. We let Cameron lead the way and he found his way out with only a few wrong turns.
Cam and Mama at one of the wrong turns.
The best part of the park was the giant snow slides. There were 30 different slides. Some were individual slides and others were very wide family slides. We saw as many as six people sitting across one of the big slides, so it would be great to do with a group. Cam and Daddy went down the big slide to start.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!!
At the bottom, Cam immediately demanded "Let's do that again!!". He also asked to do it all by himself, which we did not go for on the big slides.
On the smaller, individual slides, on the other hand... Cam got to go down all by himself. Tim put him flat on his back so he wouldn't get hurt. He got down to the bottom with a GIANT grin on his face. Unfortunately, Mama was laughing too hard to get a picture of his excitement.
The happy slider running back to another slide.
There was also a display from the Canadian military winter units. Here is Cam on a snowmobile.
And on a four-wheeler. Imagine the "VROOOMMMM" noise that Cam is making!
After we were done sliding, we got a hot chocolate and sat by a fire to drink it.
Cameron loved it, of course!
He also liked sitting on the log.
As we were going out, we checked out the snow sculptures. This one was a bunch of kids building a snowman.
And our favorite, a giant pair of skates!
The leftover blocks from the snow sculptures were used to make little igloos and forts. Cam and Daddy climbed into one of them.
Mama got in for a family picture as well.
On Sunday morning, Cameron took off his pajamas and climbed back into his little hiding place. He lined it with two pillows, got his blanket, and cuddled in for a while.
A better shot of Cam in his cubby hole.
Before checking out, we went swimming in the pool. The pool was a little bit chilly, as you can tell from Cam's lack of excitement.
They moved over into the hot tub (Cam stayed on the top steps), which was much more enjoyable. They ended up staying in for a bit longer, then going into the pool for another hour. Cam loved both the big pool and the "little warm pool".
What a great weekend, we can't wait for next year!!

Winterlude Weekend, Part 1

This past weekend we went up to Ottawa for our annual Winterlude weekend. This year it was just the three of us. We had a great time!! On Friday night, we checked into our hotel and then went to our favorite Byward Market restaurant, the Highlander Pub. We crowded around a little pub table and had a great dinner. Cameron ate very well and particularly enjoyed the chocolate dessert (which caused him to go CRAZY for a while). Tim particularly enjoyed his wee dram of scotch that he had for dessert!

After dinner we went back to the hotel and changed into our warm clothes. We walked down to the canal and crossed over to Confederation Park to look at the ice sculptures. This year's theme was Mythical Creatures, and there were some great creations. Cameron really LOVED them. He wanted to stop and look at each one, and especially liked the changing colors. There were some carvers working on a sculpture and Cam was so interested in watching them. We kept trying to leave and he just wasn't having it. He was really into it. So, while he watched them work, Tim and I got a BeaverTail and had that as an evening snack. Cam had a few bites but didn't want much because it would interrupt his view of the carvers.

The next morning we woke up and headed out to the canal to go skating. Cameron stopped in the lobby of the hotel to say hi to one of the Ice Hogs (Winterlude's mascot).
Cam liked the Winterlude signs because they were also made of ice. He liked to touch them and say "COLD!!!".
Out on the canal, Cameron started out in the sled.
Mama and Daddy took turns pulling him.
Soon enough, we were far enough away from the crowds for Cam to get his skates on. Here are Cam and Daddy skating away from the bench.
It was a little bit tricky because the icy was so chopped up.
After a bit of skating, Cam decided to take a break in the sled.
We came up upon these giant zambonis, which are used to clear off the canal. Four of them drive in a line and clear off a huge amount of the ice at once. It was pretty cool.
After a bit more skating, Cameron got to stop and get a treat. We went with maple taffy because the Beavertail line was a mile long. Cam really liked the maple taffy.
After the treat and a rest, we went back on the ice.
Cam was doing really well, so we decided to let him try skating on his own. Here is Daddy helping him get his balance.
Cam stands there, mentally preparing himself.
It is hard to tell in the pictures, but Cameron actually skated for about five feet all on his own. We went nuts with the cheering, we were so proud! He skated on his own a few more times, some of which we got on video (to be posted later). It was really awesome and Cameron was so proud of himself.

Weekend with the Borsts

The Borsts were up for a visit this past weekend. They arrived on Saturday afternoon and stayed until Monday morning. We had a really great time. Cameron just LOVED playing with his cousins - between hockey, hide and seek, puzzles, and running around in circles, they all just had a ton of fun. We got a chance to make some really nice meals and get in some good chatting time as well. It was a great weekend.

Tim and Jack play hockey by the fire while Ella works on some coloring.
Cousins!!
One of the activities for Sunday morning was a walk in our backyard and the land surrounding it. Everyone except Mama geared up in full snow gear and headed out for a hike. They walked through our land and down to the river, which was mainly frozen over.

Jack... I think he is about to pelt someone with a snowball!

Hey guys, wait for me!! It is hard to walk in this snow! Uncle Jeff gives Cameron a lift.
And Ella gives Uncle Tim a different kind of hand!
